Guidelines for Part-Time Work

About Part-Time Jobs (Permission for Activities Outside the Status of Residence)

International students can work part-time up to 28 hours per week (and up to 8 hours per day during long vacations) if they obtain permission for activities outside the status of residence. Generally, income within this limit is around 120,000 yen per month (before tax). However, please note the following points:

  1. It is illegal to work more than the permitted hours. Violations may result in denial of residence status renewal or even deportation.
  2. To live stably as a student in Japan, careful financial planning is essential. You cannot cover all tuition and living expenses solely through part-time work.
  3. Be cautious of claims such as “You can earn over 300,000 yen a month from part-time work” or “No need for remittances from home.” In reality, such cases are rare and often lead to trouble with malicious brokers. Some students have gone into debt and ended up unable to continue their studies after believing such false information.
